Author: HumanX | Saturday December 18, 2004
The answer comes from Bob Young, former CEO and Founder.
So where did RedHat get its name? There are three versions described by Bob Young at RedHat.
3. Throughout western history red was a symbol of rebellion.
2. Marc Ewing (One of the Founders) owned a red hat which was similar to the old college team hats from the turn of the century which he inherited from his grandfather. When Marc was at university, he named his software projects “RedHat ” to differentiate his projects from the rest of the class. when Linux entered into the scene for Marc, it was only natural the it was named Red Hat Linux. Tidbit, Marc is looking for his hat in Philadelphia, and this is the only bug in Red Hat they have failed to track down.
1.. When Marc was at school and fellow students had questions about computers they were routinely sent to the know it all of the class which was Marc. So when pointing out Marc they would say “The guy with the Red Hat”.
