Author: HumanX | Saturday December 11, 2004
Aint free grand? How about a free, open source, cross-platfrom audio editor for Linux, Apple and Windows? Now that is grand. Now try it and you will to see how grand it really is.
"Audacity is a free audio editor. You can record sounds, play sounds, import and export WAV, AIFF, Ogg Vorbis, and MP3 files, and more. Use it to edit your sounds using Cut, Copy and Paste (with unlimited Undo), mix tracks together, or apply effects to your recordings. It also has a built-in amplitude envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode and a frequency analysis window for audio analysis applications. Built-in effects include Echo, Change Tempo, and Noise Removal, and it also supports VST and LADSPA plug-in effects." -- Free Audacity's website
But what this also fails to tell you is that Audacity is a commercial grade audio editor. Many of the functions you may find in products like Sound Forge, you will find in Audacity.. Though interface is not that pretty, it is a very functional program and can help you accomplish most tasks.
One of the more powerful features of Audacity and it is not a feature you find in most audio editors is the Wav editing tool. You can zoom in on a waveform and manipulate it in any way you like, similar to working on a curve in a vector application. Also, Audacity supports playing and recording multiple tracks.
