LinuxDig.Com : Linux News : A List of Daily Programs for Linux and Windows, Cross Platform Update.
Author: HumanX | Monday October 18, 2004

From time to time I like to check out the current state of cross platform applications that run under both Windows and Linux. These are usually a few applications that are part of most users daily computing experience. For those of you considering switching to Linux, at the end of this document are some recommendations.

Below is a list of applications you may use on both Windows and Linux. If you are a Windows user considering Linux maybe these programs may help you make the transition. And for those of you out there who are required to work in Multiple Operating Systems, developing your own standard set applications may help you become more efficient across operating systems.

Cross-Platform Applications

GAIM Chat (IM) http://gaim.sourceforge.net
This excellent utility which recently crossed the 1.0 barrier allows you to connect to multiple chat engines at once. MSN, Yahoo, AIM (AOL) and more. I personally have 6 accounts open at all times on my Windows or Linux machines. Chat applications are becoming part of the internet experience and are worth a primary position in the cross-platform list.

Open Office:(office suite) http://www.openoffice.org
The Microsoft Office replacement. It imports and exports most Office files and includes a drawing program, word processor, spread sheet and presentation applications.

Mozilla Firefox: (internet browser) http://www.mozilla.org
The speedy browser who is just around the corner from a 1.0 release has been making headlines around the world. Because of its native ability to block popups and contains tab browsing, it is becoming a favorite among web enthusiast. Did I mention it is fast, real fast! In some opinion polls it has the honor of being the first browser to shave a point or two off of Internet Explorers usage ratings.

Mozilla Thunderbird: (email) http://www.mozilla.org
Once upon a time, Netscape ruled this territory and then came Outlook Express and Outlook. Thunderbid is a fast email client supporting newsgroups, imap, pop3, address books and more. Along with Firefox, Thunderbird is beginning to make its mark.

Other Daily Cross-Platform Applications:

Adobe Acrobat, Real Player (Movies, Music and More)

For those of you who are considering jumping to Linux and not looking back these are some of my recommendations

  • Novell Suse Linux (You can download an evaluation that runs on a CD that does not effect your current computer installation) (http://www.suse.com)
  • KDE: KDE is the default environment for Suse Linux and comes with a suite of applications for instant messaging, web browsing, word processing and more. Most applications you need on a daily basis come with KDE. (http://www.kde.org)
  • Programming: Quanta (Quanta) is a fantastic web development tool. This should be part of your KDE installation.
  • Accounting: Need a break from Quicken? Try GNUCash (GNUCash)! Has many of the same features and best of all, it is free. BTW: GNUCash will import quicken files.
