LinuxDig.Com : Linux News : KDE Considers Gecko over KHTML
Author: HumanX | Thursday October 07, 2004
It is no secret that the KDE team has been considering Gecko over KHTML for sometime now, but what will that mean for KDE?
I think KDE considering Gecko as their web rendering engine would be a great thing for KDE. Gecko is mature, fast and has a large community. Combining KDE and Gecko will also add more developers to Gecko.
One of the problems with Konqueror now is that it is not up to the standards. One example is that Konqueror is still lagging in Full CSS2 support. KHTML has served KDE well, but if KDE could move to a new rendering system which is up to date with the standards, then the KDE team could focus more of there efforts on the desktop. It would be a move the KDE Team would not regret.
Best of all KDE may then have the opportunity to find new developers, it opens the doors to those developers who are close to Gecko and whom have already developed software with Gecko. We could see a small avalanche of new software coming to KDE.
