Linuxdig.com : Updated : Novell Suse Linux 9.1 Best Overall Linux : Final Review
Author: HumanX | Thursday August 19, 2004
Over the last few weeks I have been diving into many popular distributions and giving each (RedHat Fedora 2, Gentoo, Novell Suse, Xandros, Mandrake) a thorough ride. But one distro, one very unique, German made distro calls me back again and again. Novell Suse Linux. Updated Oct 2004 with install notes.
For all the years I have used Linux, I have never tried Suse and I feel some regret and some joy now that I have found the power of Suse. And what makes Suse so special you ask? Who has the time to dig through configuration files, who has the time for documentation? Suse answered this question with Yast.
Yast is Suse's answer to system administration and I think it makes it the easiest Linux to configure. In a default installation of Windows, OS/X and Suse, I think you would find users configuring Suse Linux Installs faster then the other operating systems. It really is that good and Suse's system for running updates is just as easy.
There is also the professional quality feeling of Suse's Desktop which cannot be denied. Suse has taken KDE and built a desktop which is fluid, fast and dependable. It is without a doubt, the best overall Linux.
KDE 3.3 Update
With the release of KDE 3.3, Suse was on the ball with packages available for download. The new version of KDE is great! With allot of advances in most of the KDE packages (especially Kmail) and as always some bug fixes and speed increases.
Another review will be available which details the 3.3 release as well
as Suse installation information.
Support Information Update
There is a great deal of support available for Novell Suse Linux at these sites.
1.Suse Linux Support
2.SuseForums.org
3.LinuxQuestions.Org
4.Novell
5.And of course you can always find support at your local newsgroup or favorite IRC channel.
Closing
If you are looking for a solid Linux Server or Workstation, look no further then Suse Linux.
You can download the Suse Linux live CD from Suse's website at Suse.
Suse 9.1 Installation Notes (You Should Read)
Suse 9.1 does not install some important files by default and I want to list a few here for you which will make your life a liitle easier.
MUST HAVE:
1. iputils (Contains ping, traceroute and other network programs)
2. procfs (Programs for monitoring your computer like 'top')
3. dhcpd (if using DHCP)
4. kbd (If this is not installed you will get unicode errors and errors in many x programs.)
OPTIONAL BUT GOOD TO HAVE:
1. Pine (Gives you pico editor)
2. MC (Midnight Commander)
3. Yast-Curses (Allows you to utilize yast on the command line outside of X)
