LinuxDig.Com : Linux News : Sun to Purchase Novell Suse Linux?
Author: HumanX | Monday August 02, 2004

The rumors are running wild today with the possibility that Sun is researching the acquisition of Novell. What could this mean for Linux? Read on...

Forbes.Com ("Sun May Go Shopping" 2004-08-02) reported today that Sun may have its sights set on Novell. Sun said that it would like to use some of its cash pile to purchase companies in an effort to help it compete in the changing business market and Novell was singularly mentioned.

Such a purchase would give Linux some serious visibility in the marketplace. What you would have is the fusion of two companies who are deeply entrenched in the enterprise and server arena all focused on a core product called “Suse”.

Though, if such a purchase were to take place, there would be product overlap between companies and we the Linux community would have to wait and see the fallout. The possibility of Sun purchasing Novell is big news for Linux.

Putting aside the enterprise, both companies are rich with government, business and scientific/education customers. This plants Suse in the heart of the technological business community and gives Linux real power in the marketplace.

Linux would benefit from such a buyout also because if it were Sun to purchase Novell/Suse ,we could still expect open source support as both Sun and Novell has shown in a number of ways.
