LinuxDig.Com: Linux News: Novell, The Linux Company to Watch
Author: LinuxDig | Saturday July 10, 2004
This is an opinion piece on the possibility of Novell the Linux company whom has started to make its move. Strategy has become action and Novell has begun its advance. On its shoulder sits a penguin.
Novell, the masters of the network, masters of the enterprise. For you youngsters out there, Novell used to be the network company to turn to. Everywhere you looked, IPX/SPX appeared on workstations throughout the business community. Colleges made Novell a required course for computer science degrees and then something happened..
Microsoft began to creep into Novells territory, first slowly and then by overwhelming force. Soon Novell became the company that could, the company that did. Throughout the late 90's and early 2000's Novell struggled to reclaim itself, to beat back the behemoth of Microsoft. But to no avail.
The story is not so sad, because though Novell was beaten, they were not broken. Thousands of technicians had Novell training, Novell was and still is entrenched within the enterprise and best of all government. Novell is a sleeping Giant, waiting once again to be woken.
And then one day, a Penguin entered Novell's doors and the revolution began. Novell began scooping up and aligning with Linux Companies such as Suse and Ximian. These two purchases changed Novell from a file serving company into a File Serving Company with a desktop Operating System.
But there is more. Novell seeks to convert the Novell Operating System and Fuse it with Linux. This brings Novells extreme enterprise services straight to the Linux Server. And believe me, when you say Novell you say Enterprise. They are the enterprise company.
Linux Administrators should be watching and downloading Novell's Linux applications and beta Linux services now. Once the conversion is complete, Novell and Linux will go hand and hand. Those who admin Novell networks now, will be administating Novell Linux Networks.
Novell is a good thing for Linux. It brings unmatched power to Linux. When the argument arises that Linux is not Enterprise, the answer is Novell Linux.
It is in my opinion within the next year or so, Novell will begin a new kind of growth. They will grow the enterprise, they will grow in ISP's, they will grow in business and they will grow the desktop. The roots are budding and close to the surface, but the enterprise root is deep. And from that older, stronger, deeper root, out will grow the new roots that will firmly plant Novell Linux within the lives of business workers and administrators.
Get ready, A sleeping giant is waking and he carries a Penguin on his shoulder.
