The June 2004 issue of Linux Format reported that the Iraqi Linux Users Group supported by Al Nahrain University’s Computer Engineering Department, “gave its first seminar aimed at educating people in Iraq about Open Source and Linux Concepts in Baghdad on 17 February 2004, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM”

The LUGS web page has been dealing with defacement, crackers and DOS attacks. The web sites home page details some of the issues they have has to contend with. This is a country that has had its share of problems and maybe the Linux Community has the oppurtunity to help fellow Linux Users. The Iraqi Linux Users web site is located at Iraqi Linux Users Group.

Iraq and The Internet

As some of you may have guessed, Iraq has not had internet connectivity for sometime. Before the fall of Saddam, internet connectivity was limited to only select few. An interesting article was posted at the Iraq Linux Users Group which details current, past and future internet usage.

Hacking and Cracking the Site

We are sure many are aware that this site has been cracked more than once (see post here) and will not be surprised if further attempts are made.

We are fully aware of the weaknesses of this system but currently we are adopting a different policy, by protecting the dynamic data integrity where we continously back them up and scrutinising them for any damage or loss due to these attacks.

At the moment this policy is adequate as we do not have critical data that need protection, large volume of post contribution, or huge volume of static data that prevents us from rebuilding the site at short notice.

What makes us sad is the energy spent in trying to compromise sites based on well known cracks defacing them instead of directing that energy constructively towards identifying such weaknesses.

I am sure all respectable people out there know the amount of suffering our country have faced and the difficulties it is facing now to stand up on its feet and wouldn't want to see any damage to efforts for Iraq's reconstruction, attacks like this are really not helpful.
