When I first came across GAIM it was at version .74 and I needed a way to utilise my business and personal AOL and MSN accounts all at once without having to constantly log in and out. There are products available to do this, but nothing that runs on mulitple operating systems, enter GAIM.
Version .74 was buggy and could be a memory hog but it accomplished its mission. Over the coming months the developers at GAIM worked their way to version .77, which was a far more stable and secure version of the application.
GAIM is the perfect IM application, which not only allows you to connect to multiple IM accounts, but also supports email features, encryption and additional plugins to expand the default application. On a score of 1-10 (10 being the highest) I would give GAIM an 8. GAIM is my default and only IM application and I would not use anything else. Their are still a few minor problems which will be resolved over the next couple of releases and none of which are problematic enough to consider another client.
