Netware Unites with Linux.
Author: HumanX | Wednesday August 06, 2003

After the purchase of Ximian, Novell has announced a major shift to the Linux Operating System. A bold move? This author thinks it is a smart move, the obvious move by Netware.

Novell has seen its client lost to Microsoft over the years and has been struggling with many different way to remain a viable company. The latest SCO - Linux fight has thrust Novell into the spotlight through its claims regarding SCO liscensing. Novell has stated that it supports the open source operating system and seems to be willing to join the fight against SCO.

Novell has had a long tradition of Unix/Linux support dating back as far back as Novell beginings I believe. It only seems to be a natural move for Novell to move its services onto the Linux platform, which in turn, you can see why the fight with SCO is escalating.

Where did Novell fail. Novell is a great server operating system. It is dedicated to one thing and that is simply to serve up files. But NT came into the picture and developed the all in one O/S, which end users were happier to use.

Back to the story, over the years, Novell has developed many of its own specific applications. Web services, email services, security and group services.

Novell contains a wide array of excellent software and an advanced enterprise level interface. Fusing Novell and Linux together is a marriage which will help both the open source community and Novell.

I personally look forward to the future that Novell offers. I believe they can truely bring enterprise level computing to the Linux environment and benefit us all. Novell does offer the all-in-one solution that corporate buyers have been looking for in Linux. This is a big win for Linux and it will only further stregthen linux in modern day computing.
