SCO, Your statement has been heard, now go away!
Author: Human X | Friday June 06, 2003

SCO feels they have bee mistreated by the computer industy. I have a feeling they do not know what mistreatment really is, if they persist with this lawsuit.

To be quite honest I do not blame SCO, they have started out with a belief and they may have become a puppet in all of this. I think a darker more sinister side to this game exists. The Goal is Fear, so what then is to be lost.

Creativity, Productivity and Innovation. The 3 unseen attributes of Linux. Linux gives the little guy a fighting chance, it gives the kid hidden away in his bedroom the opportunity to show what he is capable of. It gives a dedicated group of developers the opportunity to work together, develop friendships and build something wonderful. Linux is what a neighborhood should be and what I believe the populous desires; a common, open ground for communication and sharing. Something that has been lost over the years and found once again in Linux and the computer world.

SCO has the fundamental right to ask that the code their developers have worked long and hard for to not be released freely to the world (if this is true). Their are developers out their who worked for SCO saying to themselves, that was my baby, my creation. Their are investors who provided the financial assistance to support the growth of a product. How would you feel if someone took your proprietary code and gave it away freely, and worst of all, claimed it was theirs. Do not forget the same kid who was probably developing for free at home, could be the same kid who developed for SCO making a paycheck to support his wife and family.

Now, do not get me wrong here, I am playing devils advocate and I do not have the "Poor old SCO" syndrome. I am merely pointing out a perspective, sharing with you how I may feel if something this happened to me. Their are those who do develop for profit; and hey, why should we not respect their decision to do just that. Just as they should respect those who develop freely and in an open environment. We need both, and I respect both.

The Game. The darker side. What I see happening is the press being used to cater to someone or some company's ulterior motives. The motive to break the spirit of the Linux movement and the hope of companies to invest in Linux technologies. By creating an atmosphere of Fear and Doubt, a situation is being created in which CEO's, developers, home users and so on, sit back and think what if? What if I could be next? This is what the game is all about.

A game of chess, Strategy. My only hope is that people see this for what it is, and disregard the accusations. To IBM and Novell, FIGHT – FIGHT - FIGHT, to the end. No compromise, no retreat, no failure. We want you to be the hero's of the day!

SCO, I hope you find another way through this. I hope you can find it in your heart to join the movement and not to fight it. I am sure an understanding can be found that does not require a vicious, drag out, knock down fight.

And to the puppeteer. Your methods are known, you have become predictable and if you do not change, if you do not evolve, one day you may become just a box in the back of a storage closet gathering dust. You will be found on E-Bay as a relic, an item to be traded, the end of an era that has long since past.

Thanks!
