Space Shuttle Columbia Lost
Author: HumanX (SWB) | Saturday February 01, 2003

A sad day for the United States of America and for the History of American Space Flight. The space shuttle Columbia apparently disintegrates during landing on the last day a 16 day mission.

Today is Feb. 1, 2003.

Please Feel Free to post any of these images I made on your website. You do not need to credit me. They are open to use.

Not since September 11 have I felt such sorrow and such pride for our country. Our Heros of space lost in flight returning home.

Living in Florida, NASA has always been a point of pride for its residents. I have personally watched the Space Shuttle launch on at least 3 separate occasions and once from my home in Fort Lauderdale. I think all of us have somewhat forgotten about the missions because they have become routine and I think many of us probably did not expect something of this nature to happen again for a long time.

My heart goes out to the families of the astronauts, friends at NASA, Americans and to Israelis.

Space Flight is a risk as we all know. The risk that the men and woman of the shuttle missions endure are for knowledge, for growth and to represent their country. They fly for Duty and Honor. This is what a hero is, and Hero’s one and all they are.

Raise you flags for 7 days for each astronaut who perished in the Columbia explosion.

Kalpana Chawla
William McCool
Michael Anderson
David Brown
Laurel Clark
Ilan Ramon (Israeli)

May God see them home safely and provide their families comfort.

Amen..
Amen to that! Everyone understands the dangers, but the dangers are worth it.

I think out news agencies need to stop focusing on who, what, where and how, and instead get behind NASA, solve the problem and get flying again.

NASA has provided this country with something special to be proud of, something innovative, and the families of the astronauts lost want the shuttles flying again.

I say, lets not disapoint them.

"But this mission, STS-107, is the first actual space demonstration.

"The IP experiment is part of the low-power transceiver payload, an experiment to test a global positioning system-based transceiver. It is part of the Fast Reaction Experiments Enabling Science, Technology, Applications and Research program, which puts to use spare room on shuttles for scientific experiments."

Some Info
Space Shuttle Columbia is the oldest NASA shuttle. It became the first shuttle launched into space in 1981.

Columbia is known as OV-102 to the people at NASA, which stands for Orbiter Vehicle 102. The name "Columbia" honors the sloop of Robert Gray, who lived in Boston, Mass. in the 18th century.

Space Shuttle Columbia has the distinction not only of being the first shuttle to fly, but also of having been used for the first five shuttle missions between 1981 and 1982.

The shuttle program came to a screeching halt for approximately two years after the Space Shuttle Challenger accident that killed the crew and destroyed the spacecraft. No flights were flown during this time.
