The AMD Hammer is Coming Down on Intel.
Author: Human X | Tuesday December 10, 2002

Are you ready for 64 bit computing with the option of 32 bit applications at native speed? Finally, the day has come that we may all indulge our 64 bit curiosity.

AMD's Hammer is preparing to make its debut in the first half of 2003 and will give Intel a run for its money. The new Hammer (Athlon 64 ) will integrate both 32 bit instruction sets as well as 64 bit, giving the user the option to run both 32/64 bit applications at their native speeds.

This new chip should fit nicely into the world of Linux/Unix since the majority of the applications available are written in C/C++. A recompile of some software will give a boost to those applications current performance and some minor code changes will give them the true power of 64 bit computing. It is easy to see why Intel and AMD both are supporting Linux more and more.

The sporty new hammer will (info based on leaks - may not be accurate) incorporate 1mb(server)/256(workstation model) cache, 100 million transistors and open up out of the gates at 2 GHZ.

Is 64 bit for everyone? Sure, why not. Audio, Graphic and 3d applications will most definitely benefit, as well as databases and internet servers where huge amounts of memory (RAM) are needed. I think I could safely bet that someone will release a 64 bit version of quake. Why not, many games could definitely benefit from the 64 bit performance especially flight simulators.
