Their is now an alternative to the traditional XFREE driver for driving dual monitors with your ATI Radeon card for Linux.
For Information on using the standard Xfree drivers, I wrote two articles located at

ATI Technologies has released a driver for Linux which allows you to gain some MAJOR speed benefits out of your Radeon card (Supports Radeon 8500 through Radeon 9500 I believe). The driver is for the most part self installing and will require you to run through the options to get it working.
BUT WAIT. Back up your files. I installed the driver and was it ever fast. Like 50x faster! But the downside was, I could not get dual monitors working properly with RedHat 7.3 and a Radeon 8500 128 meg.
My primary monitor worked fantastic, but the secondary monitor was not visible in a way that was workable. So I had to switch back to the old drivers which really worked fine for me. I am not after that elusive speed barrier for video in linux.
So visit ATI's website and download the driver and good luck. If it works for you, please send me an email and let me know what operating system and which radeon you are using. You can email me here at linuxdig.com at the "Contact LinuxDig" navigation bar.
