executable1. A binary file containing a program in machine language which is ready to be executed (run). From Linux Guide @FirstLinux 2. Anything that can "run" on a computer. Contrast: Newbies often don't understand the difference between executables and normal files. For example, they don't understand the difference between opening an e-mail attachment with a .txt extension vs. a .exe. This misunderstanding comes about because GUIs like Windows and the Macintosh do a very good job at hiding technical details like this from users as to not upset them.
