SLIP defines the transport of data packets through an asynchronous telephone line. Therefore, SLIP enables computers not directly connected to local area networks (LANs) to be fully connected to the Internet. This mode of connectivity is far superior to shell access (a dialup, text-only account on a UNIX computer) because it enables you to use the Internet tools of your choice (such as a graphical Web browser to run more than one Internet application at a time and to download data directly to your computer, with no intermediate storage required.
