MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)

1. The MAN is a high-speed network used within a town or city. A MAN typically provides very high-speed connections, using fiber-optic cable or other digital media, between LANs in the same area. An example is AbMAN, the Aberdeen Metropolitan Area Network (www.abman.ent.uk). More recently, in a growing number of communities, 802.11b-based WLANs have interconnected to form wireless MANs using inexpensive antenna systems and consumer-level 802.11b and 802.11a wireless equipment. An example is Personal Telco (www.personaltelco.net).
